Rolling With Punches

It was a long winding road - I can see that through mere hours' of events.

The plot was simple. During their exile, something happened to Lupin, and he disappeared into the city of NY. Severus'd been searching for him since then.

However, the author definitely has a way with words.
First, although there were only two main scenes in this story, we could see a full setting of the world. People talked, Severus listened and talked, they asked and got answers - or not, and we got to know the aftermath of the 2nd Wizard War in Britain, to know that they were damaged in many ways, that they chose the US to travel and heal, to know the general condition of America's wizard world and werewolves, to know that they gradually fell in love with each other. Such ample information was offered in bits and pieces without getting in the way of the story line. It was like that we only caught a glimpse of their lives, and the space for imagination was endless.
Second, the fic was told from Severus' view, not until the last 1/3 part did Remus actually made an appearance, however, his existence was no less than Severus. Because they were connected. The whole journey began in the cause to heal his mental and physical illness, and the search began because he left. The author created a Remus Lupin through a Severus Snape, a Remus was once crazy and feral but now affectionate and free. Then in this Remus we saw a Severus, though still sarcastic and bad-tempered, with a brave and strong heart.

And the hope!
It was a terrible, terrible world, but after all the struggle and fight, I could see a future, just like they did. :)

Lupin regarded him with a mournful look of fear and regret. Snape grabbed the back of Lupin’s head and brought his face so close to his own that their noses were almost touching. “You owe me at least a night, you miserable son-of-a-bitch.”
This line made me all teary eyes. :(

Seriously, it is GOOD!

Although it's a romantic story called "A Romance" and full of fluffy, flirtatious details, the tension is still there. Their past, along with Remus' struggle balanced the emotions beautifully.
And the characters - Snarky Severus with caring, gentle Remus with backbone - that's almost EXACTLY the way I picture them in my own mind.

I used to travel a lot, on trains. Part because I was so terrified of planes when little, part because the scenery was beyond words. Trees, rivers, cars...they were moving even when they weren't. Everything coming into sight flashed through, sometimes too fast for me to realize what it was. But at the same time, in the farther distance, spreading in front of us was always a wide stretch of land, which was UNMOVING. The contrast of dynamics and serenity was odd, surreal even. It fascinated me in a way beyond explanation.

I got some of the memories back when reading this fic. :)

But do we need a "reason" to read fanfics?

For me, fanfics make me quite happy, and that's enough to keep me going from one piece to another, fandom to fandom. I may learn something through reading or may want to translate the fics if they're good enough, but that'll only be a side effect, not the sole purpose.

Am I getting too old-fashioned for fandom world?

The so called FINALE, is that a joke?
Where is the REAL WORLD, fucked up it is? Or there's only some GOD called Carter, who can decided RIGHT and WRONG, or TRUTH and FALSEHOOD?

What if he was the one who's corrupted and everything he said were all lies?

It was like a dream weaved by Carter, who had the right to DEFINE.

Believe me, apotheosis is always a bad thing.
I hope they don't take it to the next season.

However, ironically, highlight of S110, which happened to be the interaction between Carter and Dean, was also brought out by the tendency to idolize Carter.

Why people should NEVER get involved always get involved in these shows?
Yuck.

I think Jaimie held out pretty impressively in this episode, which, although cannot excuse the not-at-all-novel scenario of having an affair with coworkers, still managed to look credible.

Why people lie? How many more lies people have to come up to patch up a single lie?
How can people keep going on while living in complete lies without breaking down?
How could people tell when the lines between truth and lies are so blurry?
Can a not-so-good-but-passable ending justify all the doings, right or wrong?

Was Carter asking too much?
Or they were just not good enough?

This IS truly a terrible, horrible, cruel world, whatever those answers are.

Which, doesn't mean we can be careless; which, doesn't mean we can't do self-check; and which, doesn't mean so many mistakes are tolerable.

Translation is not an easy job, especially when the originals are intricate and obscure and translators inexperienced. But there's only so much excuses can be made, none of which should be the incapability of mastering the basic of our native language.

And when I say basic, I mean it.
Words should flow, like running water. While there can be rocks and reefs, causing wavs and sprays, it's still active and alive, not something dry and unfresh and smells bad. In the same way, words at least should feel smooth, not ungrammatical or even, illogical.

At least, read after translation.

Sometimes I don't know how people can stand those ill re-made fanfics, and sometimes I don't know how the translators can be so oblivious to the fact that they've dishonored something precious.

When come to this pairing, I can only pick MWPP-at-Hogwarts-era-and-they-were-happy-not-knowing-what-would-happen-in-the-future fics to read. Unlike snupin, fictions can never compare to reality, however dark or cruel they are.

Maybe I've got something new to ship.

Finished watching ep2 of "Dark Blue", and found myself trembling all over for a glimpse of Carter/Dean. :)
This pair is just too angsty to pass over.

This show's not just about undercover cases, but also the people doing the jobs - How deep can they sink without losing themselves? How far would they go before the end can no longer "stay on the right side of the line"? And how to do all the dirty works when they don't even "technically exist"?

Gonna look around to see if anyone's already pulled out some Carter/Dean goods.:)

后来想到“江湖子弟少年老”就文法上也是对的，再来反倒是这一句更切合现下心境。趁着现在LJ的状态和夜半网速再写一点。
1，06年依旧在美剧与同人里度过，甚至于变本加厉了；
2，这一年里主要活动范围：XF，HP，J+；
3，因为英文同人看太多中文有生疏倾向，于是07年初重拾武侠与史书；
4，人生转捩点；
5，自我反省 - 抱持着因为信任所以可以任性的想法果然是不行的，而继续对人类这种生物持有水准以上的期待也是我自己的不好；
6，温柔是一把双刃剑，爱亦然；
7，人格分裂越发严重；
8，他微笑，略略耸起肩来，将手笼进袖口。这本是个颇为可笑的姿势，仙道却觉得可爱的很，于是也依样画葫芦笼起手来。
两人就这样肩并肩带了些落拓意味地漫行在窄巷里。仙道转过头去看看他。黑夜里，藤真的眼睛明亮得像天上的星星。

Xochiquetzl usually is not my cup of tea, especially the sex scene, but this one was just hilarious, with the not-necessarily-bad-but-in-a-way-still-pretty-evil-and-biting Severus and all his dark sense of humour and how strong the love they held.

Remus took a sip, then made a face. "I don't suppose you could make it taste like butterbeer?"
"It would probably be easier to enchant your tastebuds."
"Brilliant! Would you do the honors, please?" He opened his mouth and stuck out his tongue.

"Oh." Lupin looked into the goblet of wolfsbane. "This isn't poisoned, is it?"
"Why don't you drink it and find out?"

"My pockets are full of socks."
"That's because the rotting remains of your socks were a national disgrace. Were you using a sticking charm to attach the shreds to your feet?"
"I'll just carry them."

"Lucius would never turn you into a rug," Severus said, stirring the contents of the cauldron. "He'd never have the patience to wait until the full moon to kill you."

"Snape!" Umbridge said. "Save me!"
"If you die, I'm no longer on probation," Severus said.

"Cold showers are for Gryffindors. You should take care of the situation in a warm shower, like a Slytherin."

"Too soon," he said. Severus started to pull away, but Remus pulled Severus' head onto his shoulder and held him. "Nothing like your father."
"I won't let him hurt you," Severus said. "I won't let anyone hurt you."

"I was subtle."
"You were bloody obvious!"
"No, you were bloody obvious. I was subtle."

Remus just stared at him.
"What?"
"I'm trying to will myself into stopping you somehow."

Remus lifted Severus' wrist and kissed it. "If you decide you want to try it, there's always that shrinking charm you mentioned," he said.
Severus snorted. "You underestimate Slytherin ambition." And then he pounced.

"If you die, I'll resurrect you and kill you!" Severus said.

"What?" Severus said. "I'm surprised you're not over here kicking her yourself. She used the Crucio on Longbottom and killed Black. Didn't you threaten to tear out Malfoy's throat with your teeth?"
"Malfoy wasn't bound and helpless on the floor at the time."
Severus shrugged. "I could untie her first."

"Are you sure you don't want me to Obliviate him?"
"I'm sure," Remus said.
"You never let me have any fun."

"If we both survive," Severus said, "I'm yours for as long as you want me."

"I think I'd like to hug you right now," Remus said.
"Not in front of a student, Lupin," Severus said. "If you'll excuse me, I have an appointment elsewhere." He stood, and Remus hugged him anyway. He sighed.

"Of course," Severus said, "we need to discuss a few ground rules. Like the punishment for allowing yourself to get killed on a mission."
"Yes, yes, you'll boil my bones in Umbridge's blood," Remus said. "About our plans for this summer. I think we should throw an engagement party."
He shouldn't laugh at the look of horror on Severus' face, but he couldn't help himself.

A bit too much, I know. But they look so adorable together the I can't seem to stop. XD
I love it when the two being strongly protective towards each other. :)

Now I think something's definitely wrong with Livejournal's server.
Since the day before yesterday, a lot of LJ users here in mainland China haven't been able to open up their web pages, till now there's still no sign of recovery. And I don't believe it's just our problem, coz entries on my flist almost halved overnight.
I'm using proxy sever now, not knowing when to get rid of the trouble. Sigh.

其实说到原作，确实是陆花互动比较多……陆小鸡也比较象气管炎，爆~
另外，如果没记错的话，大金鹏王那部，西门遇上峨嵋四侠和小花的一面之缘也真是萌到翻|||
（ps一下，我真讨厌孙秀青。不是同人什么的关系，而是我本身就讨厌这种角色。。。而且俺觉得她配不上西门，酱~）

顺便说个事情，我对Sk/K的BDSM文zenzen是没什么大兴趣，反倒是MK的少有几篇都很心，比方说Cody Nelson的"Bad"。
不能否认现实里确实有喜欢为了SM而SM的人，不过俺不乐意看这种同人。如果一定要有，我总是期待作者能对于“为什么”做出水准以上的诠释。
俺承认自己不是个会轻易被题材或者桥段shock到的无趣家伙-。-
